Tour for Busgroup:
Old Lappish villages
In 1673 Finns began migrating to the north and settled on the banks of the River Kemijoki and River Kitinen. We will visit some of these historical villages (such as Pyhäjärvi, Suvanto, Kairala, Luiro and Pelkosenniemi). You will also learn how the Finns were received by the Samís as these parts were regarded as Samí territory.
We will also visit the beautiful Sokanaapa mire where lies a popular bird-watching tower. This tower is also accessible by wheelchair (distance from bus 500m). From the tower you are able to see a number of different bird species and if lucky, we might even spot the Golden Eagle and the mighty moose.
This tour will then take you to Pelkosenniemi where you will learn about ”The Battle of Pelkosenniemi” during the Winter War in 1939. It is one of the most important battles in Lappish history.
